Mandala garden design will depend on the space you have and your budget. Mandala gardens can be huge and filled with elaborate curved or spiral paths. They can include a seating or meditation area. Many times, large mandala gardens will have a water feature in the center to bring the calming sound of rushing water to the sanctuary. Usually, a lawn for meditation or a seating area is located near the water feature.
In nature, woodland plants like ferns, trilliums and wild violets happily grow in little patches around trees, not in a perfect ring within a perfect circle. When landscaping around trees, create natural looking beds that also match the style of the rest of the landscape, do not spend a fortune on a fancy foundation landscaping and perfectly placed shade trees only to have them cheapened by quick, easy and boring rings of around the trees. If you love hostas, like many people including myself do, plant groupings of different varieties mixed in with other shade plants for different bloom times and textures. You may be surprised how many shade plants there are if you look beyond the hosta tables at your local garden center.
A garden based around wabi sabi incorporates natural and manmade elements in a way that allows visitors to appreciate their humble and imperfect forms. This typically involves using not only plants but also stones and weathered manmade objects as design elements.
Repurposing old manmade objects is another part of wabi sabi garden design. For example, you can place iron objects that will rust over time, such as old gardening tools and gates, around your garden.
