Repurposing old manmade objects is another part of wabi sabi garden design. For example, you can place iron objects that will rust over time, such as old gardening tools and gates, around your garden.
In these same ways, using pastels in the garden can create a space where we can unwind after a hard day and feel refreshed. A pastel garden can be placed almost anywhere in the yard. Pastel colored flowers look beautiful in bright sunlight, but also stand out in shade gardens and can brighten up especially dark areas. Although not actually a pastel color, white is often used in pastel garden schemes. Silver and dark green also provide striking contrast to pastel garden plants.
One way to incorporate wabi sabi garden design is to choose plants and objects that will change over time as the seasons change and the elements go to work on them. Adding plants that provide natural textures in different seasons, like a tree with textured or peeling bark, is a great way to do this. Other ideas include allowing plants to go to seed and display their seed pods during the fall and winter, and allowing dry leaves to fall and remain on the ground under a small tree.
In nature, woodland plants like ferns, trilliums and wild violets happily grow in little patches around trees, not in a perfect ring within a perfect circle. When landscaping around trees, create natural looking beds that also match the style of the rest of the landscape, do not spend a fortune on a fancy foundation landscaping and perfectly placed shade trees only to have them cheapened by quick, easy and boring rings of around the trees. If you love hostas, like many people including myself do, plant groupings of different varieties mixed in with other shade plants for different bloom times and textures. You may be surprised how many shade plants there are if you look beyond the hosta tables at your local garden center.
